BSG: Blood and Chrome Web Series

Blood and Chrome

The story of William “Husker” Adama in the BSG: Blood and Chrome is the beginning  of the young guy’s career and the 10 episode web series is about his first mission as a pilot. Good news for those who are not familiar with the Battlestar Galactica is that the newly begun web series is a prequel – being unfamiliar with the previous television shows is not an obstacle. Still, getting to know the franchise might give a different perspective to the story of William Adama.

In 1978 the original Battlestar Glactica was created but the series was cancelled after a single season only to be brought back in 1980 as a 10 episode mini-series. Probably the most successful television show revolving around BSG universe is the one that begun in 2004 with a mini-series, this re-imagined Battlestar Galactica ran for 5 years while winning 3 Primetime Emmy’s. There have also been numerous feature length movies (3 which were released between 1978 and 1981 were actually edited together from episodes of the original series) and there are various comic book adaptions as well, the first one being a Marvel Comics series of 23 issues (1978-1980). Caprica is a 19 episode spin-off series that ran in 2010, telling the story of Adama’s father and uncle – being the first BSG franchise story that doesn’t involve William Adama’s character himself. This brings us to the Blood and Chrome, the second web series revolving around young Adama’s life (Battlestar Galactica: Razor Flashbacks being the first one).

It is clear that the franchise has had an extensive past, indicating that the story of robots taking over the world is a story that can be told for a long time and through various ways. Therefore the origins of Cylons, the robots in question, is quite difficult to pinpoint due to its various interpretations in all of the series but luckily the main idea remains the same: human race is at war in space. The integrity of the story seems to be consistent due to the same people behind the re-imagined, the spin-off and as well as the Blood and Chrome web series. Therefore the prequel will not only be a great start for those who are novices in the BSG universe but a good addition to the overall franchise.

Technically the web series is definitely up on the pedestal with High Definition quality and great CGI used to create the space ships, the robots and the battle sequences. Creator, producer and also writer Michael Taylor, who worked on the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica’s third season, has said that the visuals are reconstructed for the web videos from the past series.  In case the fans of the franchise still have doubts, even the composer Bear McCreary of the 2004-2009 and the spin-off series is behind this project. Therefore the story of William Adama (portrayed by Luke Pasqualino), his co-pilot (Ben Cotton) and the doctor (Lili Bordan) embarking on a mission taking place on the year 10 of the first Cylon war, deserves some attention.

But here is the actual surprise behind the web series: it is being released as a full length pilot for a television show on the SyFy channel! So in other words, the web series is a teaser or even a great way to build up the tension and interest towards the possibly newest television series for the BSG franchise. Meanwhile, the fans have Blood and Chrome and others still have time to tune into the Battlestar Galactica universe to know all the details.

  1. Was left a bit disappointed with the web series so far. I’m a BSG nerd and was expecting more. We have been anticipating the release of this for what.. two years… and the scify channel keep delaying it. Can’t wait for a TV Show if that will ever happen.

Interesting! You should do a review of the series then. I myself just got to know the world of BSG and therefore the lack of criticism. I will be certainly tuning in to see the show though, so I guess the web series works as a marketing piece.

BSG is by far one of my top 3 favorite shows ever, but I will be waiting for all these to be put together before I finally watch it. Not interested in this web series format. Very much looking forward to it though!

  3. The series seems to be in real life a bit chronologically choppy.
