Man of Steel: What we’ve learned from the new trailer

The second official trailer for Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’ reboot has finally hit the fan, and it couldn’t come soon enough. Comic book geeks and movie nerds alike have eagerly been awaiting its release since the tantalizing poster first revealed the Metropolis Marvel in handcuffs. Now that it’s finally here, what have we learned, if anything?

Well, for starters, this shiny, new Superman looks to be highly influenced by Christoper Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy. Not surprising, seeing is how it is, in fact, produced by Nolan. Not only that, but Nolan’s trilogy single-handedly (triple-handedly?) re-imagined superhero movies by digging deeper into Batman’s origin and grounding his story. Not only does this ‘Superman’ appear more somber, but the majority of the trailer centers around Clark Kent as a kid and the adversities he faces growing up. This brings an interesting twist to the character and one never before explored in film, at least to this extent.

We also learned a bit more about the actual story. Towards the latter half of the trailer we see what appear to be other other super beings; one of which, wears a beard similar to that of General Zod’s. Could these be the few surviving Kryptonians who have come to conqueror the Earth as it was in Superman II? This is all just speculation on my part, but it’s probably a safe conclusion to draw. Watch it for yourself and draw your own conclusions!

It’s definitely looks like the right direction. The cinematography is gorgeous and Cavill looks to be the right man for the part. I like the idea of really humanizing him because it’s kinda hard to relate to a character like that with that power. Very much looking forward to it.

Nice write-up. It’ll be interesting to see if audiences react as positively to this film as they did to the Nolan Batman flicks.

As you’ve mentioned, the trailer really seems to benefit from beginning by showing us clips from his childhood. By constructing it this way, it seems to nicely avoid the trap of ‘giving the whole film away’ by showing too much footage of crucial moments, and allowing the audience to inevitably guess the plot. I also like the fact that we’re only given one clip of Superman and Lois together, but as it’s one of the final scenes of the trailer it remains poignantly an the fore of our minds. The blackouts between each scene mean that we’re given enough to excite us, but each clip remains enjoyably abstract so that not too much is revealed.

  4. Small like for the movie screen, in a sense.

  5. In this website there was a tendency to write articles about movies that didn’t come out yet, which made them (the articles) quickly irrelevant.
