Netflix's Never Have I Ever and Devi Vishwakumar's journey through high school

Netflix’s 2020 comedy teen drama, Never Have I Ever, has become a well-known show for its drama and teen romance and follows a more realistic portrayal of the high school experience from a student of colour. The main protagonist, Devi Vishwakumar, is an American-born Hindu teenager who seeks an eventful high school experience while overcoming the trauma of witnessing her father’s death and fulfilling her duties as a respectable Hindu daughter. Although the series is not as exciting and "steamy" as Riverdale, for instance, Never Have I Ever reaches a higher level of relativism that can appeal to most age groups, genders, and people of colour.

  • I completely agree! It also does such a good job of showing how to navigate being a person in relationship with other people who we care about (both friendship and romantic relationships). Devi often makes mistakes and hurts the people she cares about, and the show does such a good job of showing its viewers (whether teen or adult) how to not just drop somebody because they've done something bad (or you have) but to confront problems and build healthy relationships. – alex 2 years ago
