Oblivion Trailer: A Sci-Fi Epic

The official trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s Sci-Fi epic Oblivion has popped up online, and it appears we’re at least in for a visually arresting film. The visual aesthetic reminds me a lot of the video game Portal and the movie Wall-E. I’m into the idea of floating cities and the appearance of a war-torn Earth set in the future. I always liked Tom Cruise as an actor, so I’m happy he’s still doing movies like this and I continue to find him relevant. The story seems a bit unexciting based off the trailer, but I’m sold on the visuals and action alone. I know TRON: Legacy has its detractors, but no one can deny how visually extraordinary that film ended up being which happens to be Kosinski’s strong suit.

The films also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Melissa Leo, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The film is set for an exclusive IMAX release on April 12, 2013, with a wide release to follow on April 19. 2013.

Synopsis for Oblivion:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.

I'm an absolute film buff, and love writing about movies and TV. I'm particularly a fan of Asian cinema and hope to introduce people to truly great films from that region.

You’re damn right Tom Cruise is still relevant! Looks like this could be good – thanks for the heads-up!

Yeah I still think he’s more than able to still carry a movie. I’m reading positive things on Jack Reacher.

  2. Tron Legacy was fuqing great! If it will be anything like Tron, I’m all in. Suuuuuch a shame that Daft Punk is not composing this one.

Tom Cruise sporting the Yankees hat once again! I’ll be interested to see what he brings to the film.

I don’t really like Tom that much but I do love me some sci-fi so I will probably watch it anyway. And like you said, the visuals might end up being the best part of the movie but with sci-fi, I think the visuals need to be a notch better than the rest.

Yeah right now the visuals is the only thing we have to go on. The story is only touched upon a little in the trailer, but I’m sure there’s some kind of twist.

Yesterday I went to see Oblivion, it was a very well made movie with beautiful cinematography & epic soundtrack. Having said that the story is good & by the time you reach the second half you start to realize the plot but if you have liked movies like Tron Legacy, Solaris (2002) & Moon (2009) I don’t find any reason for disliking this movie. Oblivion certainly needs to be seen in big screen & the futuristic look of the world is quite different & appealing. The story is having balanced amount of action but there is nothing which seemed to overdone; Tom Cruise has again proved to be best choice for this movie & deserves all the accolades.

I’ll be seeing it this weekend, and much looking forward to it. Thanks for the mini write up, looking forward to it even more now.

  6. The fact that Oblivion reminds you of Wall-E is a bad sign for me; I thought Wall-E was rather depressing.
