Oz the Great and Powerful Trailer: A Prequel to The Wizard of Oz

Oz

The new trailer for Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful has been released, and I still don’t know what to make of it after my viewing of the trailer. On the one hand it’s a visual feast, but I fail to see any of Raimi’s signatures in the footage. I see more from “the producer of Alice in Wonderland” than I do “from the Director of of the Spider-Man Trilogy”. The prophecy story is really played out, but I must say the movie looks like a ton of fun. The designs of all the creatures and environments are really nice, and there seems to be some nice action set pieces. I’m just worried about the story, and that’s what it comes down to. I don’t know if there’s going to be enough substance to go with the lush visuals provided by Raimi, and James Franco just seems like he’s phoning this one in. What are your thoughts?

Oz the Great and Powerful stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Zach Braff, and Abigail Spencer. The film is to be released on March 8, 2013.

Synopsis for Oz the Great and Powerful:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

While Raimi’s involvement is really the only reason why I’m interested in the movie, I’m not seeing enough of HIM in the trailer. We’ll wait and see I suppose.

Although this film won’t be a “Wicked” adaption will it? Seems to be a similar story, but no songs XD

  3. This looks very cool. Can’t wait. Thanks for the trailer!

I need to see this. Had no idea it was a movie. But I loved the book, all the Oz books actually.

  5. It does put a new fold into the Wizard of Oz tale to have the witches all be skeptical of Oz.
