Subtle or subliminal romantic pairings in movies/TV when the explicit message is otherwise.

The first example that comes to mind is the relationship portrayal of Sherlock and John Watson in BBC’s 2010 adaptation of Sherlock Holmes; nothing is said about them being homosexual or attracted to each other yet this is a reading which MANY fans have derived from the series. What other similar examples can you guys think of?

  • Supernatural - the relationship between Castiel and Dean Winchester (although even the cast themselves joke about this fan theory). – SophIsticated 7 years ago

  • This touches on a vast cultural trend where "shipping" is a major aspect of fan engagement with film and TV. It could be interesting to write about, but I would want to shift the focus from subtext to the fandom itself. – smoldoggo 7 years ago
