The 'decade-definer', outside the decade

Friends is the ultimate 90’s show; The Office is the ultimate 2000’s show; and now Rick & Morty is the ultimate 2010’s show. Each of them managed to amass a giant audience of rabid fans, spawned countless merchandising opportunities, and became cornerstones of their era of pop culture. But Friends didn’t end until 2004, and The Office didn’t end until 2013. Now Rick & Morty joins their ranks as it stretches into the 2020’s. The last few seasons of Friends & The Office are now regularly derided for their lame attempts to stay current and reference contemporary pop culture. Will Rick & Morty suffer the same fate? Is the pattern doomed to repeat? Does the show define the decade, or does the decade define the show?
