The portrayal of mental health issues as a glamorous personality trait in YA fiction

It’s becoming more and more normal for characters in YA books (and increasingly, real life) to exclaim as a passing remark ‘I’m so depressed about [insert minor inconvenience]’. While it reflects the state of the modern youth that may find using such words a release for their emotions, it also sends out the wrong idea that mental health issues are to be taken lightly and used as synonyms for feeling temporarily sad or stressed.
