Self-Help Toxicity

Examine what draws people to self-help books etc. and how these are based on a model of capitalism wherein they exist to create a deficiency within the reader and promise the solution with their book/product/theory. However, it isn't the fix, and the cycle continues.

Include actually helpful practices and what to avoid when trying to find resources for self-improvement.

  • This is an interesting topic for sure, but it needs a clearer focus. What do you mean by "self-help toxicity?" What makes an example or technique of self-help toxic vs. healthy? Who are some practitioners of toxic self-help? Explore these questions. Don't be afraid to name names if you want. Talk about specific, practical ways in which people can protect themselves from toxic self-help, and specific healthy ways they can help themselves instead. – Stephanie M. 1 year ago
