Kaze no Stigma – the value of mid?
What does the term “mid” mean? Not literally what does mid mean, but connotatively what does the term “mid” mean? What springs to mind when someone describes a show a place or a thing as “mid”?
Recently, especially in anime circles mid is not something that is middle of the road or middling instead mid is “bad”. Anime circles have always been filled with argumentative sorts but as of late there’s been a rise in polarization between shows being peak and shows being mid.
Characters are frauds and characters are GOATs. And in some areas, this can be very funny. It is quite humorous, after all, to change the name of characters from Sukuna to Fraudkuna if you’ve been online too long and have a broken sense of humor. In a purely memetic sense, these are punchy and easily circulated but after the jokes are over when one sits and engages with a property that you’re consuming what does it mean if that property is mid and what does it mean if that property will forever be mid?
Trust the wind, in my heart!
Kaze no Stigma or Stigma of the Wind, is a 24-episode anime produced by Studio Gonzo and licensed by Funimation. It was based on the light novel series of Takahiro Yamato, who passed away in 2009.
Kaze is an anime that was released in the spring of 2007 and sits in the top 500 on MyAnimeList. It is about Kazuma, an exile from a fire-wielding family who has returned with air powers. He is joined by his love interest and heir to his family, the hot-headed Ayanno who has fire powers along with his younger brother Ren, who is a prodigious fire user. The series is about how upon Kazuma’s return members of his family turn up dead and he’s the one blamed. He proves his innocence but his family still ends up having to fight an underground gang war against various families and clans that have water and earth powers. It’s one part Avatar The Last Airbender and one part Yazuka.
In terms of animation quality for the time it is nothing too impressive. In the same season as Kaze No Stigma, classics Gurren Lagann and Afro Samurai both burst onto the scene as animated marvels. Kaze is a basic looking both in comparison and in presentation. It doesn’t do much that other shows don’t do.
As far as characters go almost every single character is some shade of something done a hundred times before. A red-headed tsundere love interest, the cool and aloof protagonist, the cute younger brother. It’s all been seen before. The show doesn’t attempt to break new ground in any area
The plot of the show over 24 episodes is about the protagonist leaving home after being a failure of a fire user to come back triumphant as a powerful air user.
But with all of that in mind, there is still the question of “Does this show do anything with its story?” Does it say anything interesting? Does it play with the family relations? Does it deal with the weight of responsibility? Does it deal with the concept of lineage? And the show says, resoundingly no.
To be mid?
So then what is the value of this show? Why is it being discussed?
As stated earlier, the show even if you wanted to give it a glowing review could at best be placed as not derivative. Maybe a bit of a twist on an old concept and overall probably worth another season if you’re really feeling generous.
But this show never got another season.
This show will never get another season because the story could never get another chapter. After all, the author died.
It is very rare for works to be continued after the death of their creators especially anime that aren’t necessarily setting the world ablaze. Kaze No Stigma now sits at a 7 out of 10 there haven’t been re-releases of its animation, the manga and light novels are actually quite difficult to find and all of this leads to a show that isn’t especially terrible but will be forgotten.
And what does that mean?
What does it really mean for all of these shows to be released and then subsequently forgotten when you think about books, or movies, or games, there’s often reverence treated for the classics but they’re still sort of a respect given to contemporaries and this may just be a commentary on the nature of consumerism in general but anime seems to have a much more voracious consumption pattern.
In the year and season that Kaze No Stigma came out, there were 201 shows according to myanimelist.
That summer there were 198 including one of the most infamous shows in anime history, School Days.
School Days is notable not just because it was released the same year, but in the fact it has a far lower score on myanimelist and yet is 200 spots higher than Kaze No Stigma. It had an entire franchise and even won awards. Despite being considered by many to be one of the worst shows ever.
It’s a wonderful comparison because School Days is a bad show the plot is terrible. The characters are terrible. The animation is not that good. The themes, the morals, everything about the show is disgusting and yet it’s a show that has a legacy that far outpaces that of Kaze.
So what does this say about the show about Kaze? Did it die when its author died? It’s hard to argue against that. Berserk’s author Kentaro Miura, died quite recently. Dragon Ball’s author, Akira Toriyama died quite recently and this is not to say that Kaze is on the same level as those mangas, it clearly isn’t. But it is to say they’re not limited by their ties to their author. A show is not produced by an individual and yet with their death, it can be ended by one.
Perhaps if Kaze No Stigma was peak there would be more of a push to have more of it. After all, Berserk is considered peak by many. Dragon Ball is considered peak by many.
Or maybe if Kaze No Stigma was terrible and had a legacy that overshadowed anything else because of how bad it was there would be more of a push for re-releases but as it stands it’s just one show, from one season, that wasn’t particularly bad, wasn’t particularly good, and thus exist in this state of forever being incomplete, forever being inconsequential, forever being mid.
What do you think? Leave a comment.
Stop giving me hope for a new season. 🙂
My favourite “mid” anime have to be the series that make the emotional thematics hit with their use of cinematography, sound design, music, and metaphorical imagery (even if the rest of the series isn’t trying to do anything special or isn’t able to live up to its intentions), especially if trauma & love & found family are major themes.
For that reason, I’ll always love series like “Sound of the Sky”, “Birdie Wing”, “Boogiepop & Others”, “Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls”, and “Harukana Receive”, and underappreciated greats like “Flip-Flappers”, “Wandering Son”, “ID: Invaded”, “World Trigger”, “Akudama Drive”, and “Tada-koi”.
My dad said mid once and I cringed so hard. It really isn’t even a creative word
If MY dad said this, I would disown HIM
I speak Portuguese and I got addicted to say mid, now everything I think is avarage, not bad but not good, I use mid.
Mid is mid ironically.
How hard is it to write a season 2?
Arcs: father/son reconciliation; edge lord and girl finally make it official; guy/girl both grow in power and maturity; kazukas past is overcome and big villain defeated.
Mix in some small plots and edgelordness.
Pleasure to edit this piece and see it live on the site! Great article!
Im kind of disappointing that the series will never finished but I understood why tho.
Japanese cartoon (anime) fan used the word mid too much they even ereas tresh, bad, worse in their dictionary.
Mid just seem like a cool way to say average or decent.
Demon slayer mid ngl.
MHA is more mid.
when you’re watching anime seasonally in significant quantities (10+ shows), mid comes with the territory, and you can’t always know something will be mid. and sometimes you have to give mid a chance to become more. I’m watching a Winter show now that I didn’t pick up while it was airing, The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil, and to be honest, it’d fail the three episode rule. Not that it’s without charm, but it’s in episode four where I realized ‘hold up, maybe you need to let mid cook for a bit’. it’s turned from an adequate show I watched on a whim to something I’ll definite complete in the near future, and enjoy. hell, I even went and looked up the manga, and the manga is GREAT.
Yea, a lot of times what we refer to as ‘mid’ is something with high highs and low lows, too, which means that there’s some greatness buried there, and it may not be the whole show, but it might just be your new Best Girl, or some of the slickest fight choreography you’ve ever seen, or an immaculate vibe you’ve found nowhere else.
I just finished watching the anime today. It’s so sad that this anime never got another season because the story and characters are so good.
Please SHOUTOUT to the management of anime kindly release the KAZE NO STIGMA SEASON 2 already. in demand anime and more focus romance/love to kazuma and ayano please. Hear us.
It was a very enjoyable show but the ended didn’t satisfy me i dont believe there will be a new season but never give up hope theres always that slim chance it comes back i highly dout it though.
Ayano in my opinion is the most annoying character in the damn show!
This is the morbius of anime haha.
Stuff like Frieren, zom 100, apothecary diaries are some of the best anime from last and this year. But i have watched crap like: my guard dog, my daughter returned an s class adventurer etc but i think it needs to be there.. i mean how else will you diferentiate between good or bad.
Probably chivalry of a failed knight not because it has most of the stuff I look for but because it has some things I remember liking.
Literally just throw on some mid on dub every season just to enjoy the real good jazz.
The sad part is there was tons of potential with this show: it could’ve been a very emotionally powerful exploration of disregarded nobles with inferiority complexes, and the arcs involving Tsui Ling and Ayumi are surprisingly very mature and well written, but unfortunately the rest of the series meanders the whole time and by the time it gets to the main focus it’s too little too late. Kazuma’s motivation kind of made no sense as you mentioned and Ayano kept rapidly changing from a generic tsundere to a supposedly mature character despite immediately going back into being whiny immediately afterward. Also the romance stuff was really weird, aren’t Kazuma and Ayano not only of a notable age gap but also cousins!?! I get that Kazuma and Ayano don’t interpret it as a romance but the show makes it seem like it is.
Only positives I can give this series was that it did have some very interesting concepts and the humor and chemistry was surprisingly pretty funny. I saw it in Japanese and English and I actually think the English dub has some great chemistry between the cast.
This. But I wish it was used for a stronger narrative though.
Well at least getting familiar with low and mid tier shows gives you more of an appreciation for the truly high tier ones.
Actually I liked this show a lot.
Just finished the last episode, definitely felt like the last scene could have been the kiss between Kazuma & Ayano with that whole build up speech but he smacked her butt instead n she fell into the water cue tsundere rage mode ayano lol so that in itself was classic of their relationship….still sad it didnt happen knowing there wont be a season two, and we wont see Kazuma getting revenge either kinda wanted him to save Lapis too.
Good show. And good aritle. After finishing it I looked up a bit of fanfiction.
I will make an attempt to write my own fanfiction about the second season with On Character perspective, but also picking up on the building Takahiro Yamato presented on the first season (and yes, light novel included).
Though I don’t watch anime that much. I have come to the conclusion that I’m a super normie. So mid means something else to someone like me.
I’ve watched so many mid anime back to back that I can’t stand them anymore, I’ve been watching some good anime lately and it’s so good, although it’s kinda sad when they end.
Dont be sad because it ended. I wish the author didn’t die.
It’s a great anime also the English dub is awesome the voice actor for the MC is fucking phenomenal and plays the part so well it’s uncanny.
The mc is not a stupid kid ( like rly stupid ), getting powers and owning everyone, and actually has story, why he got powers. Good.
I rewatch it now again at least they make a season when they finish the story about Tsui ling I’m curious as hell tho.
Sad the author died may he rest in piece, but I wish someone will finish his work and create season 2. I really do, plus I do wish there was a scene where the the two main character kissed.
There was one. When Kazuma offered medicine in Ayanos mouth. It were in the first few episodes. But I want more.
I just binged watched it since i missed it when it aired.
It’s very humourous and action pack.
What an awesome anime. What a cliffhanger.
I love this anime to bad that it doesn’t have season 2.
I watched this anime many years ago.
I hate the ending.
I miss this anime.
