    LGBTQ Characters in Anime

Which anime series or films have been successful at accurately portraying characters who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or part of any group in the LGBTQ community? Which ones have failed? Give multiple examples and explain why.

    • I think this is a great topic, although, it would probably have to be almost exclusively focused on the "failure" end of the spectrum. Aside from a few major exceptions (Yuri on Ice, the Kaze to Ki no Uta OVA), a lot of anime either hasn't done a great job in portraying LGBTQ characters or, notably, have just avoided the topic altogether. Manga is certainly more inclusive in that respect. – tjtheemperor 7 years ago

    • It's a great idea but the problem is that LGBT doesn't usually get much visibility IRL in Japan let alone any explicit recognition in anime and manga. Yaoi and yuri aside, I feel that in order for inclusion of any LGBT characters into mainstream anime/ manga, they usually have to be a) not-explicitly stated as LGBT or b) be ridiculously misrepresented. – Hann 7 years ago

Steven Universe is an excellent show, and has so many diverse characters. I liked this analysis of how typical masculine and feminine traits are balanced.

I’ve heard many of my classmates mock anime before, especially boys, which I was surprised about. In fact, my school has an anime club and most of our members are girls, including me. Many popular anime series are considered shounen and I’ve met/know of many anime fans that are guys, so I was surprised to find that every person I heard making fun of anime was a boy. I also haven’t heard a single girl scoff at it.

Some people may argue that Mulan isn’t a great role model. The article stated that some critics believed the film was “offensive because it teaches a woman must act like a man to be accepted or feel comfortable with herself.” However, the movie’s message is that it doesn’t matter if she is female or male. She’s a strong soldier who earned Li Shang’s trust and respect. She saved her country and brought honor to her family. After her secret is revealed, Mulan says to Li Shang, “You said that you’d trust Ping. Why is Mulan any different?” I believe Mulan is a wonderful role model for females like myself.
