Is the “Immersive Experience” in music creating a False Sense of Place?

A musica-ficta? “Immersive Sound” is presenting an artistic creation, an out-of-body and strongly emotional experience, but far from our "sense of place" within reality. How do you feel about this move to “immersive” musical experiences and how does it navigate successfully within traditional 2-channel, and even, surround sound?

Sorry, no tides are available. Please update the filter.

As a grandparent of an Autistic child, I was attracted to the article, but did not connect to it like the others, as I do not watch these types of shows. However, I will comment on one, The Good Doctor, which I watched once. My comments reflect those of Red007, above: the main (autistic) character seems overplayed or exaggerated. Why? Perhaps my experience or better said, what I expect from someone who identifies themselves as “autistic” is a lot more serious then most I encounter on media productions pointed out in this article.

My experience with our granddaughter is one who suffers from serious social skills: where there is little interaction/communication unless prompted to ask a question or more commonly, answers a question. Her real-time movements, sounds and reasoning are those we see in the main character of Rain Man. However, unlike the this fictional character that was institutionalized for most of his life, my granddaughter went to special schools and lives in a loving home – thus, she eventually became a lot more functional in day-to-day activities than what we see in the autistic man portrayed in the movie. This said, it far to early to see if our 10 year old will ever live on her own.

So, you can see my disconnect from people that list themselves within a “Spectrum”, as most of (these) individuals enjoy a very functional life, like those portrayed in the media productions cited in this piece.

Well, to be frank, the title and opening paragraph did not prepare me for a talk about Rilke. I must suggest, writings like this should introduce the theme (or subject/s) within the “Introduction”. This said, the piece was very deep and informative.

My initial reason to read this article was the title: in this sense I looked forward to a more domestic appreciation between vacationing and creative writing: how we document the wide scope of experiences from both local and of course, World travel. This conversation is also close to the relationship between Travel Photographers, and for example, fine art photography. The former, revealing how the medium of writing acts as a conduit for sharing experiences and emotions experienced through travel, the latter defining the unique differences and exploits the photograph. Thank you.

A very in depth review (Book Review) as it were, and first, I strongly recommend “On Photography” for those serious about delving into the intricacies between photography and the philosophy of photography: here Sontag focuses on the unique characteristics within the photograph and the conflicts born from (initial reactions) of the inherent mind-independence of photography, and an equal group of skeptics that are steadfast in their quest to prove photography’s mind-dependent (artistic) features. A must read for every student of photography, as well as patrons of the arts.
