Sound and Silence in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation

Sound (or lack thereof) plays an important role in Lost in Translation. From the opening moments with Bob Harris (Bill Murray) filming a commercial in Japanese to the jazz singer in the bar to the culmination of the film with the muted exchange between Bob Harris and Charlotte (Scarlett Johhansson). Analyze the various ways in which sound and silence function in the film.

    • This would likely require at least 5 scene-by-scene analysis to prove significance. You could also check screenwriting patterns and indicate whether sound and silence specifically navigate through the plot points. – hazalse 5 years ago

I appreciate the detail in analyzing the songs line by line. It’s chilling to think of confusion as just darkness. Most of the time I think we tend to associate confusion with quantifiable chaos–think of how we’re digitally bombarded every day. Confusion as darkness though really conveys the paranoia, frustration, and sadness in The Sound of Silence.

Alienation in Simon and Garfunkel's Music

This is an intriguing article that touches on a lot of significant ideas related to film theory. Makes me want to revisit my film theory classes I took in undergrad. Have you read Tania Modleski’s analysis of femininity/sexuality in Hitchcock films? I think you would like it!
