Agree with this article completely. Thought this season started off strong but quickly lost its way in terms of plot development and characterisation – totally lost interest. Agree with your points on the shows ‘shock factor’ – it all felt a bit too try-hard, ironically having no effect whatsoever. As ever, the shows saving grace were the performances.

Great article and I agree! Also agree with Utah’s comment above, as much as I love the sub-genre, it is increasingly stale. That’s why if you haven’t, I would definitely recommend watching VHS-2?!There is a short in it directed by Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sanchez called A Ride in the Park – novelty wears off quick but it’s a refreshing take on the zombie tale, showing it from the zombie’s perspective – not in a Warm Bodies heart-felt kind of way but more gory-ruining-a-kids-birthday kind of way!

World War Z and the Growing Appeal of Zombies

Undeniably zombies have transcended into the mainstream with recent productions such as The Walking Dead, a GiffGaff commercial and as you say, World War Z. However I think there will forever be a cult zombie fan community, the ‘true’ lovers of the undead that dedicate time and passion to the zombie legacy from which modern productions draw their inspirations from. Another interesting point here is now that zombies are integrated into the mainstream, other paratexutal activity has surfaced such as zombie walks which are arguably the new markers of the ‘true’ fans..

Nice comparative essay here! I really rate the characterisation in the TV show, especially the way the Carl-Rick relationship is going. Hoping that season four will spend more time on Tyreese etc though!

The Walking Dead: Differences Between Comic Book and TV Show

Totally agree! I have no doubt that Fuller, as a horror fan, would have at some point or another drawn some form of inspiration from the films of Argento – the similar aesthetic sensibility is most definitely there. It is bizarre that past exploitation flicks have integrated into mainstream horror – perhaps an interesting comment also on how audiences are becoming desensitized to all matters of horrific imagery?
