The abject female in The Monk

The abject female has arguably been a principal Gothic subject. Explore the ways that the female and the female sexuality is demonised and othered in The Monk (by Matthew Lewis). Consider the different female characters that appear in The Monk and compare how they are each treated/viewed throughout the novel. How are they viewed through the male gaze compared to the female gaze?

This was so interesting to read! I’ve only quite recently discovered Poe through my creative writing degree and absolutely adore everything I’ve read from him so far, especially ‘The Fall of the house of Usher’ and ‘Ligeia’. Love all of the connections you’ve made. This was really thought-provoking 🙂

I really like your article and all your points. Whenever i’ve read/watched Harry Potter I’ve always strongly related the death eaters and Voldemort with Nazis, so I loved your points relating Harry Potter with other groups, and your point about generations relating death eaters and voldemort with things limited to their time period.

I’ve thought and read/watched content regarding gaslighting in Tangled by Mother Gothel, but I hadn’t actually considered gaslighting in other Disney films. So this was very interesting to read 🙂
