The alter-ego issue requires some speculation about the director's motives that would need to be substantiated by interviews or other citations, I think. But certainly there are director/actor pairings that audiences have come to love, and that seem to be good ongoing collaborations. Tim Burton / Helena Bonham-Carter / Johnny Depp come to mind.
