    The Sexualization or Demonization of the Arab Woman in Film

    Analyze the images that illustrate the Arab woman in Western societies. Trace the portrayal of the Arab woman in film and explore the transition in film when Arab women were advertised as alluringly sexual, and oppressively objectified to dangerous and suspicious.

    • This is really interesting and I think it's important to pinpoint just when the portrayal changed so drastically from being sexual to being viewed as as a threat. I think an important aspect is also the Islamophobia in the western world even though not all Arabs are Muslim and not all Muslims are Arabs. We know that is not the case, but in the post 9/11 world, many are quick to jump to conclusions and I think that way of thinking is very much present and reflected in film. – siddamna 9 years ago

    I love The Fosters and have been watching it faithfully since 2013. This article did a really great job in bringing out the exciting and unique representation of the LGBTQIA community in characters that we have not seen develop before such as Cole and Jude.

    But I find that The Fosters goes beyond that. It’s called “The Fosters” and therefore an entire plethora of different problems that consistently face the foster system finally get talked about! I don’t believe I have ever seen a show that addressed the issues of what happens to women of color in the foster system, what happens when they age out, what happens when foster parents or siblings take advantage of a completely clueless foster kid when it comes to identity theft, and forcing them into debt without them ever realizing it. So many unique topics being approached, and while The Fosters is doing a great job in honing in on these problems, I think it is crucial for more TV shows and movies to follow in their footsteps.

    I think a really good point was made about creative control. While we do see a lot of great directors take on the challenge of being both Director and Writer, such as Tarantino and Christopher Nolan, I think it is hard for general audiences to step back and remind themselves of the huge responsibility that is placed on both crucial roles in film making. Shyamalan did write and direct a couple of great films, but how many of us can whip out 10 consecutive scripts that excel in both character development and original story plot.

    Wow! This was a very powerful article! The conclusion, noting that there is this mainstream claim that Television is “progressive” even in the face of statistics and thousands of accounts of sexual harassment, was especially powerful.
    But I do believe that even with all this abuse of young women, and the insensitive portrayal of women’s abuse in TV and movies, there is also a lot of potential to be found within the popular medium. I suppose what I am trying to say is that now that the problem is located, there is an opportunity to find the solution within the place where the problem is manifested.
