End Game: An act of genocide or an agent for change.

Analyse existentialism and Thanos as a free and responsible agent of change through his own genocidal acts in the name of environmentalism, make a comparison to the environmental concerns we face today and if Thanos was right in his efforts to decrease or eliminate the population.

  • Interesting idea! I think it's also worth considering the idea that since the Infinity Gauntlet was so powerful, Thanos did have other options (e.g. doubling resources or reforming our existing structures/policies to be more sustainable). How does the possibility of these other options (which may have their own flaws, to be fair) further complicate the morality involved in his snap? – Demetra 5 years ago

Has social media destroyed a our relationships or empowered them?

Analyse the facets of human relationships.

Do we know our friends or a version of them?
We have the ability to connect with anyone at the end of our fingertips. Are we really connecting?
Has social media given isolation an environment for community spirit?
Are all social media platforms beneficial and if not what are the benefits and troublesome tendencies?

  • I know people who have met their best friends through a type of social media and completely had their lives changed by the relationship. I've connected with amazing and not to great people on multiple platforms and there's so many different views that I could see being looked at in this article. We live in a world where many of us 'live' online. I think all types of social medias would have benefits and negative points. Making new friends, business inquiries, cat fishing and bullying are a few I'd focus on. – TorriPaige 7 years ago

  • Many people are skeptical about the "realness" of online relationships, but there's emerging evidence that those relationships can be more honest than face-to-face relationships. There's an interesting discussion at http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/05/31/1222447110?with-ds=yes: Marital satisfaction and break-ups differ across on-line and off-line meeting venues John T. Cacioppo, Stephanie Cacioppo, Gian C. Gonzaga, Elizabeth L. Ogburn and Tyler J. VanderWeele PNAS June 3, 2013. 201222447 From the abstract: "Results [from a survey using a nationally representative sample of 19,131 respondents who married between 2005 and 2012] indicate that more than one-third of marriages in America now begin on-line [that was back in 2013, so it's likely even higher now]. In addition, marriages that began on-line, when compared with those that began through traditional off-line venues, were slightly less likely to result in a marital break-up (separation or divorce) and were associated with slightly higher marital satisfaction among those respondents who remained married." – JamesBKelley 7 years ago

  • There is definitely a dark side to online interactions, including trolling and doxing, but my thoughts keep returning to the positive. It's worth doing an internet search for: online dating and marriage There's a lot of information, including a number of studies from 2017, about the benefits of online beginnings of marriage: lower divorce rates, higher levels of satisfaction, greater opportunities to find spouses outside of traditional and limited social circles (e.g. increased opportunities for interracial and/or same-sex marriages and partnerships). – JamesBKelley 7 years ago

  • Like personal interactions it depends on the person and the community of people they surround themselves in. – haileysolessmith 7 years ago

  • We have friends whom we know personally, and probably have added them on our social media channels. However, people we add only because they have friends of our friends, now those are people we only know a certain version of them either through their profiles or chit chatting about them with others. In terms of connecting; we do connect with our close friends on an emotional and interpersonal level when we comment or post on each others' social media updates, or share photos of each other. What is posted can definitely cause any emotion in an individual, groups of individuals, and worldwide. However, if we are in the same room physically, and are browsing through social media feeds, THAT is when we are not connecting at all whatsoever. – Yvonne 7 years ago

Thank you for all of your comments. They are very much appreciated and food for thought in my ongoing research 😀

Made the hair prick on the back of my neck. I have read some awful experiences of both women and men in prison and the lack of humanity and rehabilitation. It seems there are no second first impressions and people are treated like animals. No wonder people reoffend and are haunted by the fight for survival in a place where its second nature to disregard another human being. 🙁

I am in agreement here. When decisions are made by men for the whole and have enforced gender roles on society since forever, there is only one ruling force and that is the patriarchy. Men do have it bad at times, you’re right. However, it is men making those decisions for other men.

Women also have occupational hazards. Especially those in the sex industry, which is frequented by a prominent male cast. Women are left without rights, access to healthcare, safety or the benefits of what a “normal” job might have. Its hypocrisy. Nurses and care workers also have hazardous jobs where they are beaten and abused and if you look at the way rape is used as a weapon of war and how women are abused in the military its enough to put anyone off applying. Not that women haven’t. In fact they have petitioned to be on the front line. As have many female journalists and foreign correspondents.

So true and such a shame that the first thing government go for in these terrible times are the repealing of human rights. How can a government say women have equal rights when they don’t have ownership over their own bodies and family planning. Its beyond me.

Its very true. He has become so powerful and dangerous. His relentless repealing of human rights acts and access to healthcare has taken the country back by years. He falls for everything and stands for nothing that benefits the population apart from the small few who do not need it. Obama may have had his flaws like all presidents but generally things change for the better moving forward. I don’t think anyone can say the same for Trump he is one of our present day dystopias in leadership.

I love to see how remakes unfold. Now and again they are better than the original and can surprise you.

I will be watching Mulan as soon as its released. Its one of mine and my sisters favourite Disney films. The female lead was a fighter and someone we could identify with. She had strength and gusto.

The article was really interesting, especially reading about the back story and original intensions. It was a great read the first time around and I enjoyed revisiting for a second viewing. Cant wait to see it with some context behind the remake. Many Thanks 😀

This is it exactly. It’s diversion tactics and somewhat of a ploy to gain funding or sway policy to help advance areas of industry at speed when we should be taking due care not to rush and be sure what we are doing will not backfire later on.

Very much so. The rate in which jobs are being replaced especially those with manual labour. We will always need a human eye and will most definitely gain jobs in coding and such. It’s really thinking about the ethical implications of replacing a workforce, on the one hand it could be utopia giving humans more free time, or, it could jeopardise our whole infrastructure. Either way the political system will be swaying to the profit of the capitalist economy, it’s a sorry state of affairs.
