This is a great review! I saw the film yesterday and confess that I enjoyed it more than the book. I felt that Mockingjay was a bit rushed and hurried in coming to an end and with two films, it seems that the directors are able to offer a more realistic portrayal of Katniss’ psychological struggles. Your review is well written, very structured and convincing.

I had never thought of it like that before but you’re right! We are like the Capitol when we focus on the love story, it goes to show how valid the author’s criticism of Reality TV is. While I usually don’t like statements how the young aren’t engaged enough with important worldwide conflicts, I cant help agree with you that often the big issues are pushed to the background with the young adult genre.

I definitely agree, that historical perspective definitely plays a role aswell. Many dystopian novels like 1984 and Farenheit 451 were published after major wars.

This is a good summary and analysis of upcoming films. I think Guardians of the Galaxy will be a good film provided that it has enough comedy. Watching the trailer of the film kind of reminded me of an inter-space version of the Pirate of the Caribbean films if that makes sense. I’m looking forward to watching Gone Girl as well as reading the book drove me crazy. It will be interesting to see how the film compares.

I loved HTTYPD and I think the fact that Hiccup is such an original hero character was one of the reasons why it is such a good film. His character reminds me of Mike Wazowski in Monsters Inc. In the second film you see how desperately he wants to be a scarer even though he’s not the typical ‘scary’ monster. In the end Mike discovers that he is something better, he’s not scary, he’s fearless. Like you pointed out about Hiccup, he’s more of a ‘brains over brawn’ character. A perfect example of how animated films from Disney and dreamworks can provide fresh perspectives and alternative viewpoints on life.
