Trans representation in anime

There is a complicated history in the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in anime, particularly when it comes to trans representation. For example, Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club is one such character where their identity is a little more ambiguity with Haruhi dressing in more masculine clothes and as such being referred to with male and female pronouns, and not minding whether they are seen as a boy or a girl. However, the show is very controversial regarding views towards LGBTQ+ characters, especially Tamaki Suoh. Newer animated shows and anime are more inclusive such as Stars Align, Komi can’t communicate and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. How has trans representation improved over the years and where does it still need work?
