Brian Michael Bendis’ new take on the X-Men proves to be yet another solid addition to the ranks of Marvel NOW! As with quite a few of the Marvel NOW! books, All New X-Men is dealing with the aftermath of the Avengers Vs. X-Men event. Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, has ended his short time in prison and is now working alongside Emma Frost and Magneto to liberate the mutant race. Cyclops’ choice of actions have concerned his former X-crew. Now Storm, Beast, Shadowcat and Iceman must come up with a way to deal with Cyclops. Beast finds a solution in the past, where he asks the young Scott Summers to travel through time and face his future self.
While All New X-Men left me with mixed feelings, I will say that it is quite solid. However, this series was sold on the concept of having the X-Men team of the original Silver Age comics traveling to the present. This concept is not acted upon until the final pages of this issue. Even with this minor disappointment, All New X-Men #1 is a great first issue that appeals to both new and longtime readers. The focus is primarily set-up for concurrent issues, but given the circumstances, this is acceptable. It is nice to see a plot-driven superhero book like this after the action-heavy events of Avengers Vs. X-Men. If issue #1 is an indication, Brian Michael Bendis will have the same success with All New X-Men that he had with The Avengers.

Going to pick this up as I am less of a fan of action heavy strips and more a character/plot driven enthusiast!
I agree. Comics can be about a lot more than just guys in tights punching each other, and I appreciate any attempt to do so.
Agree with Amanda. If I would read a comic, the development is more important for me than the action shots. Same view in all art really. Maybe why I hated Avengers (waaay to much action for my taste).
Definitely check out the stuff Image has been putting out lately. There are some truly creative and well written books like Saga, Manhattan Projects, and the like. A lot of the #1 issues are also available for free on the Image website, as well as on ComiXology.
I would go ahead and give it a five! Thoroughly enjoyed it. CAn’t wait for #2!
I have been looking forward to some of the Marvel Now Titles. I have been a little scared of this one, but I may have to give it a try
Xmen is one of my favs, but I must admit I’ve barely read any comics. I’ve only seen movies and the cartoon which I really enjoyed as a kid.
So too much of a Silver Age tease for your tastes.
