Definitely check out the stuff Image has been putting out lately. There are some truly creative and well written books like Saga, Manhattan Projects, and the like. A lot of the #1 issues are also available for free on the Image website, as well as on ComiXology.

I would absolutely recommend Saga with your given parameters. You do not any previous knowledge of comics to enjoy Saga to its fullest.

My vote is also on Brad Bird. If he’s involved, then maybe I can be excited about Star Wars again. Just so long as Damon Lindelof is not involved. We don’t need another Prometheus.
