Historical Accuracy in Film: How Important is it?

This article should focus on viewing films and stories that take place in the past – how accurate are their outfits, props and locations? Obviously this wouldn’t apply to full-on fantastical worlds, but stories that are meant to take place in our world like the Rurouni Kenshin films, the Last Samurai and the like could all be considered. It would also be interesting to discuss how important historical accuracy is – although many of the audience may not catch the small details, are they worth putting in regardless?

    • Might be worth looking at films that deal with famous criminal affairs or political affairs and see how the director presents facts - is he biased? can he be completely neutral? Same for historical dramas. Might be worth looking at how films can differ depending on their country of origin and how countries can have different perspectives on the same events. – Rachel Elfassy Bitoun 9 years ago

    • I would like to see the focus of this article be focused on which details are important to the story in the sense that they are there for a reason. I've stopped reading many "historical fiction" novels b/c the author was more invested in displaying their research than in telling a story. In film, the stakes are raised b/c production staff are required to physically reproduce those details, so it becomes even more important to decide which are worth the money and screen time, and which are "padding". So it becomes a dance between the writers, director, and production crew -- how are those decisions made? – Monique 9 years ago

Pacific Rim: The Role of Family in the Drift

This article would discuss the focus that director Guillermo Del Toro placed on the concept of familial bonds and their role in the Drift. The article could also discuss the role of trust and memories that come with the Drift as well as break down the different relationships of Jaeger pilots in the film and additional material. Tales from Day Zero and the art book would be helpful assets as well as the wikia as it includes quotes from Travis Beacham, the film’s writer.

The Real Life Issues of Gold Farming

Gold farming is a phenomenon in massively multiplayer online games where players will sell in-game gold for real life money. Despite being against the rules dictated in most games, this still occurs in almost every game – most gold farmers are actually teens from countries like China and India where they work to barely support their families. This article could discuss the culture behind gold farming from the perspective of Western and Eastern players as well as the evolving human right issues involving it. For the Win by Cory Doctorov and In Real Life by Cory Doctorov and Jen Wang are both sources of inspiration and information that could be used.

      • Actually a very interesting topic given how much online games have expanded. Discussing through perspectives of all players could be good and showing how it affects the economy for certain areas (Given it's popularity) and maybe go into how it's popular? Perhaps links between the perspective of MMO players (From anywhere) and how it leads to gold farming. Lisa Nakamura did a good article about the racialization of Chinese farmers in WoW and how new racial stereotypes develop through the online worlds. Lisa's article is a different subject matter but could be useful with citations and various development on what the perspective of players are when it comes to MMO's – Xzephyr 9 years ago

The Adaptation of All You Need Is Kill to Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow was a successful and fresh take on the sci-fi genre in film, but not many know about its origin as a light novel and then a manga in the form of the Japanese "All You Need Is Kill." This article could look at and compare the source material to its Western counterpart as well as discuss the changes done and what was gained and lost in translation.

      • Interesting, I read the manga because of the hype behind it, then the light novel, but didn't quite keep up since I'm not much of a movies guy. A quick wikipedia summary of the plot suggests to me though that the action is glorified and the psychological effects downplayed in the film, whereas it's clearly the reverse in the original sources. – Austin 9 years ago

      Careless Lion

Interesting article – I don’t know if I agree with much of it, but it’s good to see things from another perspective.

I agree with that for sure, but there are plenty of low level tournaments that aren’t aimed towards the technical pros. Although some of the most interesting things is watching technically masterful players go at it..

The Touhou fighters are great fun, but play very differently from your “standard” fighters – they focus heavily on zoning because of the shmup nature of the source material.
