    Are Reboots Necessary?

DC Comics' Crisis On Infinite Earths was a much needed cleanup of their super-hero universe when published in 1984. However, there has been sequels and attempts to re-initialize the DCU that has been unnecessary and makes fans irate. Was New 52 necessary? Why Convergence? Is continuity a much needed factor to appeal to an audience?

    • They usually do this to boost up sails, and they also have reboots to give new comers a fresh start in to DC universes. Take the New 52 for example: while they may have introduced different origins for the character for new comers, they really did isolate loyal DC fans, who did not like the unnecessary changes that in a way kind of ruined the characters. – Aaron Hatch 10 years ago

    • There's a helpful comparison to make between the current Convergence Reboot and New 52. Both seem to be done out of reactionary concerns to the market. This piece seems incredibly well suited to the current happening between DC's Convergence and Marvel's Secret Wars. – Pixelfaded 9 years ago

I have reservations about Frank Miller’s work since Sin City. I just re-read DK2 and it is as horrible as I recalled it to be. He may have once been a pioneer, visionary and rebel for the North American comic book industry but presently, his work is anything but. I hope this new project allows him to shine once more.

Bruce Wayne is an obssesive psychopath who suffers from guilt survivor syndrome. Clark Kent is the sole survivor of an alien race who cherishes and values his adopted home world. Both are similar in that they are orphans and both honor the memory of their parents.

Batman sees the worst in humanity as opposed to Superman who sees its potential. The Dark Knight believes in order while The Man of Steel believes in freedom of choice.

Yet, the common ground they both share is justice but their methods differ. Hence, why they will forever be in conflict with each other.

Swamp Thing #53 was my first introduction to Alan Moore’s writing. I hunted down all the issues of Moore’s previous Swamp Thing issues where he evolved many of the lesser known DC characters such as Etrigan The Demon, Phantom Stranger and Arcane. This series led me to try one his greatest body of work; Miracleman.

In 1990, Peter David and Esteban Maroto created a fantastic saga entitled The Atlantis Chronicles which gave fans of the DC Universe a history of Aquaman’s ancestors. While it was not required reading, Peter David used the tapestry of Atlantic Chronicles to weave out some of the best super-hero sagas during his Aquaman run from 1994 to 1996. While it does have some tones of humor, it helped develop the character and make him one of the most powerful beings instead of the often mocked ‘fish talker’.

Avengers Assemble had an epic plot that was inspired by the first volume of Mark Millar’s The Ultimates whereas Age Of Ultron was nothing less than a yawn inducer that a 10 year old with figurines would have imagined. It was safe and predictable so as to not offend the fans of the comic book version.
