Definitely putting this on my watch list now — you make a good case for it putting an interesting twist on more established cinematic themes.

Realism and cynicism are two completely distinct philosophies – each is defined in rather considerable detail. I can’t tell if I am supposed to take this as arguing that modern films are more realistic or more cynical.

That’s actually an extention of a very good browser game called Fallen London. Since that game is entirely text the focus is almost entirely on story and atmosphere – if you like it in Sunless Sea, you’ll definitely like it in Fallen London.
