The ironic thing is that Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, grew really disgusted with otaku culture, including the hyper-sexualization of Rei, and yet now she’s almost like an anime sex icon. I think this is a great discussion of the character, especially the loneliness and emptiness.

I never realized how many animated movies had the “cute little sidekicks” trope, and how most of them come in groups. Great piece!

I do this quite a bit so I am glad I’m not alone and that that there aren’t as many negative consequences as I feared. Great piece!

Indeed, it was nominated for 4 Oscars. Also I didn’t put it on since it did have a major theater release, at least in the US and Europe.

I was really surprised when someone told me how low budget Primer was. It looks better than even some of the big budget Hollywood fare. He’s making a new film soon, can’t wait to see that one!

I put Melancholia on mostly because its run was limited, but you are right, it’s likely the most known on the list. And I’m glad you agree!
