The portrayal of feminism in Fleabag (2016)

One of the topics that has appeared in BBC’s Fleabag is feminism. As a women-centered television drama, Fleabag focuses on the life of a woman who lives alone in London and the women surrounding her such as her sister, dead friend, and stepmother. What is the attitude of the director on feminism in this TV series? And how feminism is shown through the narrative, characters, and mise-en-scene?

It’s so great to see your article! I really like the point that the feminism in this television series is not “perfect”. On the contrary, in such a world where women still meets the restrictions from patriarchal power and the requirement of being “perfect feminist”, just being oneself is the most important thing.

Agree. This is a sad condition. The most famous graffiti artist is Dali Zhang I guess and others are not known by the public…hope this will change in the future

Yes I think the pandemic has made some existed negative sentiments towards power, social structure, etc uncovered (or amplified). It also adds to new anxiety, and social media help circulate them

Thank you for the recommendation! I have watched the trailer of that documentary several months ago but not the full film – really appreciate the work of these Chinese artists.
