Actual-Play Podcasts Diversifying Media Like Nothing Else

This topic is based on a tumblr post (or tweet I can’t remember) that I saw saying “actual play D&D podcasts have done more for POC and the LGBTQ community over the course of a few years than the film industry has done in its entire existence.”

I think it would be interesting to examine what’s so appealing about actual play shows (The Adventure Zone, Critical Role, The Broadswords, Dimension 20,etc) that draws in underrepresented groups.

I went into Spider-verse with low expectations because of how many Spider-Man adaptions have been made over the years. Needless to say I spent the duration of the film trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. It was my personal film of the year 2018 and this piece sums up what distinguishes it so well!

Into the Spider-Verse Provides Hope for Mainstream Animation

I have always found the train sequence to be fascinating. It’s such a contrast to the loud fast paced scenes in the bathhouse. It’s quiet and the only other characters are shadows. I’ve also thought perhaps the shadow of the young girl on the island symbolizes Chihiro officially leaving her old self behind. It becomes a shadow in her past as she travels forward on the train. Wonderful piece!

Spirited Away: Change as a Positive Force

I grew up Asian American, partially in Hawaii so when Moana came out I was ridiculously excited to finally have a princess from a culture that resembled one I saw somewhat growing up. I cried watching the trailer. I cried off and on throughout the whole film during my first viewing and to this day I get goosebumps when I hear the soundtrack.

Funny thing is, I’ve talked to a lot of people who still haven’t seen the film because they didn’t have any interest in it. It’s a harsh reminder to me that diversity in Disney is still a serious issue.
