Best of 2012: Movies that made it to IMDb’s Top 250

2012, the year the world was supposed to end and apparently did not, has been amazing for many reasons. We have gotten to see great super hero movies, thrilling action sequences and experienced some extraordinary adventures. But the question in everybody’s mind is: what is the best movie of 2012? Answering that question is rather hard since our taste as people and movie enthusiasts relatively different and sometimes changing. But I thought to seek out a measuring tool that combines the general opinions and gives a more or less accurate results in relation to the best movies of 2012.

IMDb and its TOP 250 movies shows the best of the best in its list and out of all the movies of 2012, six have gained enough high scores to make it to the list. Most likely, these following are the best movies of 2012! (Keeping in mind that some 2012 movies will be internationally released in 2013, some of those could make it to the list later, for instance Les Misérables.)

6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (# 211)

perks

The coming of an age story of Charlie is based on a book by Stephen Chbosky and his name should be remembered for following reasons. Chbsoky not only wrote the book, he wrote the screenplay and directed The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a teenage drama with Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller and Mae Whitman. His artistic and true to the book take on teenagers and their complicated lives in The Perks of Being a Wallflower certainly is one of the best portrays of young adults.

5. Argo (# 195)

Ben Affleck proves yet again that he is not just an actor but a great director. Following his success with Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Argo is his third feature film and currently the most successful one. When CIA is involved, the drama and thrilling situations are certainly present but the five Golden Globe nominations Argo has gathered show that this movie is one of the best of 2012.

4. Life of Pi (# 194)

Placed in front of Argo, Life of Pi is another book to movie adaptation but this time it brings into life the story of a young boy and his adventure with unexpected company. Ang Lee who also directed Brokeback Mountain is back with stunning cinematography and a score that has earned Life of Pi a Golden Globe nomination in addition to Best Movie and Best Director nominations.

3. The Avengers (# 129)

avengers

Another saving the world movie with superheroes but not just regular ones, The Avengers brings together all the great ones from Marvel comics and puts them together on the screen: Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye. A project that took many other movies before it was a success and the proof of it is in the fact that despite the lack of award nominations, The Avengers was a hit among its viewers and comic book movie fans.

2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (# 115)

Peter Jackson has already brought us a similar story with Lord of the Rings but The Hobbit is not less exciting nor lacking of adventure. With a seemingly endless production, The Hobbit was finally here in December and already it is thought to be the best of 2012. Martin Freeman portrays a believable hobbit named Bilbo and Ian McKellen returns as the wizard the viewers are accustomed to know him as.

1. The Dark Knight Rises (# 37)

Though the first 5 in this list were all kind of competing with each other, The Dark Knight Rises has no competitors in terms of taking the first place of being the best of 2012. Ending up at place 37 on IMDb’s TOP 250, The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s last Batman installment that brought action and drama with many great performances. Christian Bale continues as Batman while Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt join in to make this movie the greatest of 2012.

Pretty slick idea to use their scale mate!

  2. Still to watch Argo! Perks of Being a Wallflower totally deserves the spot.

Controversial comment coming up: The Avengers at #129?! Must be the fan boys as the movie should not be any any top list.

Well I like to look at movies from the point of view of their genre, The Avengers is among the best in terms of comic book movies for sure. But of course, one could go the way of looking at the whole movie spectrum and go “bad movie” in terms of The Avengers. Just depends what you are looking for and what you usually like.

Too much action and not enough character story. I can understand though that some people found it amazing!

Well, I was well aware of the characters before watching it based on the Marvel movies before this.. but I guess I’m just personally a friend of comic book movies.

Tell you what, about once per year, I go to the toplist, hit CTRL+F and search for the year and hope that there is a new movie to the list that I haven’t seen. Last time, I found Intouchables! Thanks for making this job a lot easier for me this year.

The Hobbit though? Im suprised it wasnt very good and I thought it was universally a letdown.

Just goes to show that, while IMDb might be useful in some cases, it is too ruled over by idiot fanboys to be taken too seriously.

  7. Perks of Being a Wallflower was one of the best movies I’ve seen about teenagers! I agree, great idea to use their scale.

  8. Argo I think holds up pretty well.
