The Works of Quentin Tarantino

Our grandparents had Hitchcock, and now we have Tarantino. Every generation has their defining filmmakers and Tarantino happens to be one of them for our generation. You can talk about some of his greatest works and the story behind them, his work ethics, how he came to be a director, etc. The possibilities are endless.

You can also write about another filmmaker if there’s someone else you’re more passionate about.

  • Would be interesting to explore the reasons for Tarantino's success and if they are the same today than when he first started. What are the key elements of his filmmaking that make him so different? Also, I've heard that Tarantino said he would stop after his 10th film (he has been around for many years now yet has only made 7 films, the 8th being in prepraration - what does that show? quality over quantity?) to avoid repeating his style over an over again until audiences get tired and he makes a bad film (the case of many directors). what does that show about him? – Rachel Elfassy Bitoun 9 years ago

  • "When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, 'no, I went to films.'" - QT I think that quote says the most about his success in creating truely fresh and original work. For me, his greatest skill is not his ability to come up with new ideas, but rather his masterful ability to seamlessly weave together myriad dramatic and cinematic innovations from the past 100+ years into beautiful film remixes. You can tell through his work that he absolutely adors movies and everything that they are. – Paris Yee 9 years ago

  • Good lord please for the love of Christ don't let Tarantino be considered the defining voice of our generation. I mean he's a great film maker but the VYP he is not. He's effective, he's profitable and well regarded by critics and audience alike. He's practically become his own trope and that's an interesting enough article. – wolfkin 9 years ago

Obscure Fairy Tales/Mythology to Adapt

Instead of recycling the same idea again and again, I think film studios can start looking at more obscure fairy tales or mythology to adapt. I’m sure there are myriads of them out there, not limited to Ancient Greek or European stories.

  • You could use the animated film Song of the Sea as an example of portraying a lesser know mythological creatures, with their use of Selkies. – Christina Cady 9 years ago

  • Although quite famous, The Little Match Girl should figure here. There are barely any adaptation of it. True, it's really sad but it's also beautiful. – Rachel Elfassy Bitoun 9 years ago

  • I'm quite partial to Russian folklore, I'd love to see a claymation style adaptation featuring Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Beautiful. – Natalie Sheppard 9 years ago

  • I was thinking about American Gods by Neil Gaiman and how he integrates myths from many different cultures in the book and its sequel, Anansi Boys. Agh the adaptation for this book needs to go forward ASAP! – Arlinka Larissa 9 years ago

  • I enjoy all folklore, but one that I've never seen adapted is East of the Sun and West of the Moon (Russian). It might also be worth your while to check out South American, Chinese, Norse, African, and First Nations folklore for an interesting evaluation of this topic. – jennewymore 9 years ago

  • I'd like to see the Juniper Tree adapted somehow. I think maybe an anthology film could work with actors playing several roles, which could be a comment on how most fairy tales characters appear to just be copies of each other. – Jamie 9 years ago

Best Post-2010s Animated TV Show List

I have seen many articles swirling around about the best Animated TV Shows and most of them are saturated with classics. I’d be interested in seeing a similar list, but of newer show, like Bob’s Burgers or Rick and Morty. Can be post-2010s or post-2000s. Your pick!

  • This is a subjective topic, so whoever writes this article would need to clearly explain why a specific post-2010 animation is "classic". – Ryan Errington 9 years ago

Divergent: Who Sympathises With Tris Prior?

Does anyone actually relate to her as a character? IMO, she’s literally too perfect, a typical Mary Sue conjured by an inexperienced writer, unlike Katniss.

  • This is a really interesting topic and question to bring up. I have read the Divergent series and do agree that Tris is a very different kind of person but someone else could definitely relate to her. – Brooke McQueen 9 years ago

  • This could also take a look at the different characterizations of characters and which ones have worked the best in film to explain Tris Prior's success or downfall as a relatable character. – RachelLMcIntyre 9 years ago

  • You could relate her struggle to those of Katniss and Bella Swan. How does she handle herself in comparison? Is she more or less interesting? – Thomas Munday 9 years ago

  • Yeah I agree with you, it'll be interesting to see how they compare. Maybe Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments can also be added though I'm really not familiar with that series. If nobody wants to take this topic in the next week or so, I'm happy to write about it :) though it'll only be about Tris, Katniss and Bella (movie versions, sorry book fans!). – Arlinka Larissa 9 years ago

British TV vs American Adaptations

Do you notice any re-occuring patterns in American Adaptations of British TV? How come only a few achieve the success of its original source? What went right/wrong?

  • You could discuss the cultural differences between the two countries or perceptions of both sets of audiences as factors. For example, Life on Mars was highly praised in Britain, while its American remake was panned and cancelled after one season. – Ryan Errington 9 years ago

A Look at the Bibliography of Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal is an influential writer who has written across a wide spectrum of topics and mediums.

It’d be interesting to look at his delightfully diverse bibliography and analyze why he’s found such success in all the different platforms.

The Impact of Fresh Off The Boat as the First Asian-Led American Show

Fresh off the boat has been a hit with audiences, Asian or not, but what does this signify for Asian characters in the American media industry? Will there be more opportunities for them to appear in mainstream films in the future or is it just a one-off thing? And no, I’m not talking about them appearing as a henchman or asexual best friend character.

The Significance of Anamorphic Characters in Bojack Horseman

Did the creator made them that way just because or is there something more to it? How do the show’s anamorphic characters differ from the human ones? I think it’ll be an interesting to explore.

      • Never thought of that. Maybe knowing how certain animal functions like dogs and cats being house pets, horses being used as a function of transportation, or even birds to send messages. – dthechadwick 9 years ago

It is somewhat of a cash-in, but I enjoyed it with a sense of nostalgia. A well-made movie nonetheless, so it won’t be a waste seeing it for its visual achievement.

Great article 🙂 I’ve recently gotten into the Bob’s Burgers craze and just couldn’t stop binge watching it!

I’m not a fan of shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy because all of the reasons you pointed out. The families are just so cruel to each other that it’s not even funny. The Belchers are a whole different story. Not only are they insanely hilarious, they also hit me with the “feels” every time a touching moment comes up.

I saw the trailer recently and I don’t think I’ll see the movie except if its the only movie I haven’t seen in the cinemas. My 15-year-old sister is a Divergent fan and even she doesn’t think that the trailer looks good.
Really can’t stand this new stream of fantasy “Young Adults” books. I grew up reading Harry Potter and the Inkheart trilogy, but it feels like the standards have dropped low over the years, even though I’m only 20 now.
Last YA series I indulged on was the Hunger Games, which starts well and promising at first but declines by the first chapter of Mockingjay. The movies are great though, especially Catching Fire, but I don’t think that any of these new YA adaptations are gonna cut it like THG does on the big screen.
But we shall see, I might end up being very wrong.
