Crossover TV: The Triumphs and the Pitfalls

There are rumours that Supergirl will be crossing into the Arrow/Flash DC Universe. This article could analyse some TV crossovers and how successful they are. Why do TV makers do them? When do they work best? Is it confusing to those viewers who only watch one of the shows? Some good shows to talk about would be:
Family Guy/American Dad
Simpsons/Futurama
Arrow/The Flash
Bob's Burger's/Archer

Plus looking at some of the 90s shows that started it.

  • also how about Xfiles / Fringe – wierdbuthatsok 9 years ago

  • I think its interesting that all the shows you mentioned above, with the exception of X-Files/Fringe, are all comedies. Are comedy crossovers better accepted by viewers? – Cagney 9 years ago

  • Arrow/Flash is not a comedy, I am offended to my soul! Haha, possibly good point though. – Francesca Turauskis 9 years ago

  • I think a good idea to bring up would be one show being morning charge than the other, much as when Arrow crossed over into The Flash and the show treated Oliver like the boss in Flash's own show. – Hailtothechimp 9 years ago

Food Porn? - The Glorification of Food within Culinary Programs

Programs like Man Finds Food or Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives present meals in very excessive forms. As a result, they glorify food in its presentation/texture to an exaggerated scale. Why do such programs do this?

      • It might also be worth exploring how the meals are not only excessive in these shows, but even the most simple dishes are enormous beyond need - particularly in shows based in the US. – Hannah Spencer 9 years ago

      • Another such show to consider would be Man vs. Food. I can understand undertaking a challenge, but I've never understood why one would want to willingly eat so much at once. – BethanyS 9 years ago

The Rocky Horror Picture Show remade for network TV

Fox TV has announced that they would remake the Rocky Horror Picture Show for network TV as a two-hour event special, and would be choreographed and directed by Kenny Ortega, director of the three High School Musicals. How do we feel about this? Can the Rocky Horror Picture Show be remade as a film (not talking about the stage version) ? How does the content of Rocky Horror be unsuitable for such event? What are the elements that would work/wouldn't work for TV?

        • You could talk about how shows that are based on older movies like Bates Motel and Hannibal have done well, and how rocky horror picture show could do the same. – Aaron Hatch 9 years ago

        • You could also look at the success of musicals in recent years too - from Glee and the High School Musicals, to more recent things like Pitch Perfect, and how their popularity could indicate a possible success for this. – Hannah Spencer 9 years ago

The brilliance of political comedians in relaying news to the masses

I recently watched a John Oliver segment from when he flew to Russia to interview Edward Snowden. Oliver, realizing that the case around Snowden is incredibly important, but also finding that many Americans don't have a clue who he is or what he did, he decided to find a way to relay the news in a way people could understand – through comedy. Instead of laying out the "boring" facts of the matter, he spoke of the NSA operations with Snowden in regard to "dick pics," something Americans can laugh at and actually pay attention to. In this way, he brought attention to an important matter that many otherwise wouldn't bother knowing. Examine how Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, and the like brilliantly dumb-down the news so people will actually know what's going on in the world.

        • It would also be interesting to look at the recent polls that show that a majority of young adults (18-24 yrs is the range I believe) report that they get all or most of their news from political comedy shows. – Katie Brown 9 years ago
