Amateur Documentary Makers

Are there any amateur documentary makers who deserve recognition?

    Non-Actors Transition into Cinema

From former wrestlers to reality tv stars, how and why do they transition into cinema. Is this transition successful or doomed to failure?

    • I can definitely see this trend in people like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura, and Andre the Giant. – Erica Beimesche 10 years ago

    • A comparison between those who have successfully transitioned vs. those who did not might be interesting in order to determine if there is a trend. Wrestlers have been mentioned, but others like musicians (Dwight Yoakam), etc. should also be part of the analysis. – pudgeblossom 10 years ago

    • I liked pudgeblossom's point about musicians. Perhaps the best way to focus this topic is to look at the following: 1. Athletes (this goes all the way bacl to Olympic Swimmer Johnny Wisemuller in Tarzan) 2. Musicians/Singers 3. Now we have reality stars – fdemelo 10 years ago

    The X-Files Revival

What can X-Files fans expect when the series returns for a limited run?

    • The fans are going to make comparsion to the orginal series and the show will go for a season or two..flounder then get canned. I don't think the producer will have done enough research to know what the fans really like. – sanjay 10 years ago

    • I've been a fan of this show for over 20 years now. I watched it every week since it first debuted. I've seen both movies in the theater on opening day, and I loved both. I'm excited to see my favorite characters come back and to finally get to see some new episodes of the show that I love. While there are some fans out there who are already critical, already listing the many ways the new season will go bad, I like to think I am in the majority: a life-long fan excited to see my favorite show come back. – apbinne 10 years ago

    Why Orwell Matters

What is the importance of Orwell's work in which he critiqued Totalitarianism (1984) and Imperialism (Burmese Days)?

    • The Topic is the title of the late Christopher Hitchens' book on Orwell's import. – thistle 10 years ago

    • It certainly is thistle, I have enjoyed many of Christopher Hitchens' writings. But it can still be used as a topic by anyone on The Artifice who is an admirer of Orwell's work. – Ryan Errington 10 years ago

Which Fictional Books Should Be Adapted For The Screen?

Is there any fictional books which would be perfect for adaption? If so, then why?

    • I think with the popularity of biopics like "The Imitation Game," and "The Theory of Everything," I think an adaptation of "The Cryptonomicon" would do really well. – G Anderson Lake 10 years ago

    • I think "Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides would be a great choice. Especially considering the upcoming adaptation of "The Danish Girl." Both stories deal with the transgender identity. – Cagney 10 years ago

    • The Tamil epic "Ponniyin Selvan" is widely considered to be one of the most exciting stories every told, and this is the reason it has been left untouched for more than 60 years. It is just too perfect to be translated to any other medium. – Akilan 10 years ago

    • I'd like to see an adaptation of Darren Shan's City trilogy. It has the prefect balance of mystery, fantasy, grittiness and intricate stories. The first two books run parallel to each other so it would be interesting to see this (although I think this would be better for a tv show). The variety of interesting characters (Paucar Wami, Al Jeery, the Cardinal) is just brilliant. – Jamie 10 years ago

    A Society Without Creative Expression?

What would a society be that lacks creative expression? Why is it important for creative expression to be a part of a society?

    • I think it would be interesting to mention how creative expression is both valued and repressed in different areas of society. For instance, talk about creativity in public schools and how education can foster or hinder creativity. – carlied 10 years ago

    • I think creativity is proportionate to interacting with Nature. Humans have observed, learned from Nature and creatively build societies. To continue building staying connected with nature would be important. – KoseSeeks 10 years ago

    • A society lacking creative expression would be oppressive. I cannot imagine a world where one could not have their own outlet for creative expression nor one that I could not appreciate others creative expression. We learn to open our minds to other possibilities and ways of doing and thinking, to expand who we are and our relationship with the world around us. – brightcloud 10 years ago

    • Referring to any famous dystopic novel could aid in helping readers truly envision what a world without creative expression would be like, assuming they've already read it. Like brightcloud said, it would be an oppression and is presented that way in the following novels: 1984, Brave New World, Feed and many more. – Slaidey 10 years ago

The Benefits and Downfalls of Public Relations

Celebrities regularly engage with PR to promote themselves as well as to make money from sponsorships. Clearly this is one benefit, but are there any others or even possible downfalls?

      Most Influential Comedians

Who and why are the most influential comedians?

      • A lot of the best comedians came from Saturday Night Live. The best examples are Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, and Tina Fey. – Aaron Hatch 10 years ago

      • This article could spawn another article about the cultural impact of Saturday Night Live, since, as Aaron pointed out, a lot of great comedians came from there. George Carlin and Richard Pryor should also be included on a list of influential comedians. – S.A. Takacs 10 years ago

Good point. It lets audiences’ imagination undertake the investigation in the same manner as the protagonist.

I think it is dependent on the time period. Russian stereotypes were popular during the Cold War era just as derogatory representations of the Japanese within American cinema/animation during WWII.

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) would have been a good choice to add. It was not directed by John Hughes, but he did write the screenplay. It is a mature take on romance and relationships.
