Avengers: Age of Ultron and the 10 Gems That Can Make it Shine

With the summer blockbusters now beginning to erupt on the screen we can take a quick look ahead into Marvel’s cinematic universe. Avengers: Age of Ultron will premier summer of 2015 and Joss Whedon began filming in locations around the world including South Korea, England and South Africa. As usual Marvel has been pretty tight-lipped about specific plot points. The Internet is a blaze with rumors and leaked camera phone pics from the sets. We know that the Avengers team is expanding by at least 2 with the introductions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Vision will be in the film in some capacity and the rest at this point is purely speculation. Like the Infinity Gauntlet, composed of the Infinity Gems with unique abilities I have constructed a list of potential additions of all types I’d like to see in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Included in this list are my thoughts of what would make for a perfect AoU. It is in order from most likely to “maybe if we could buy the rights back”. The first five on the list have some logic if not evidence to support my claim for their inclusion. The second five are pure speculation and more of a dream list. The list has characters to introduce and classic Avengers commodities not included in the earlier film. I welcome comments that include what you’d like to see. A year from now we can re-visit this article and either laugh hysterically at my absurd suggestions or cower before my amazing abilities of pre-cognition. Enjoy the list.

10. New Locations

Screen Shot of Stark Tower at the end of Marvel's Avengers/
Stark Tower after the last battle in Marvels Avengers.

Avengers Tower/Avengers Mansion/Baxter Building/Daily Bugle/Sanctum Sanctorum

Marvel’s Avengers ended with Stark Tower being nearly destroyed. Only the “A” in Stark was left emblazoned on the building. This was certainly a not so subtle hint at the potential of Avengers Tower being the base of operations and not a S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier or the Triskelon. WIth the recent destruction of all things S.H.I.E.L.D in Captain America: The Winter Soldier we may have been set up to see new locations in AoU. Avengers Tower is almost certainly going serve as the home base of the Avengers, however I’d love to see the classic Avengers Mansion that has been destroyed and rebuilt many times.

Other Marvel locations within New York City I would love to see even if it is in background shots or overhead pans are; Baxter Building (home of the Fantastic Four), Daily Bugle (Newspaper of the Marvel universe) and Sanctum Sanctorum (mansion of Dr. Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme). We know that New York City is the epicenter of the Marvel Universe and it seems reasonable to see some other marquee structures of the Marvel Universe. With so many overhead shots and pans through the city a quick view of one of these buildings would feel natural. With Fox and Sony owning the rights to the Baxter Building and Daily Bugle respectively, Stephen Strange’s mansion looks like the most likely choice. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Stephen Strange was mentioned and teasing viewers with a fly by of 177A Bleecker Street, Greenwich Village, New York, New York would keep the internet in a frenzy for Dr. Strange.

9. Avengers vs. Hulk

Key Stories: Incredible Hulk #300, 1984

Ultimates Vol. 1, 2002-2003

World War Hulk, 2007-2008

Yes please. Any issue that has Hulk fighting another hero is a must read for me. Whenever Hulk fights the Avengers, it brings out the best in all of them. We have seen the leaked photos of Iron Man’s Hulkbuster Armor and we can only hope it will be necessary for Stark to wear it at some point in AoU. The prototype Hulkbuster armor appeared in Iron Man 3. The aftermath of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner discussing Stark’s foresight into having armor designed specifically to fight Hulk would be a way to flesh out their relationship. In Marvel’s Avengers we saw Thor vs. Iron Man vs. Cap and Thor vs. Hulk. How great would it be to see the teamwork of the big three all against Hulk? Hulk cannot be controlled. That’s why Bruce Banner is so high-strung. If we keep with the theme of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury preparing for the worst possible scenarios, Hulk rampaging through the city seems like a logical potential threat. I am not calling for Hulk to play the villain, but the most terrifying aspect of Banner/Hulk is what happens when he loses complete control? Who can stop him? Perhaps “The Mighty Avengers”.

8. Less Iron Man

Heads up Display of Iron Man armor
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in his Iron Man armor.

1st Appearance: Tales of Suspense #39, 1963

Created by: Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck & Jack Kirby

Likely the most unpopular pick on my list. If AoU features Iron Man heavily we will begin to see a less dynamic storyline and the series will begin to go stale. The general population loves Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and so do I. He has helped build an incredibly strong foundation for Marvel Studios. I call to your attention the first 3 X-Men films. Great films for bringing some of our favorite mutants to life however by the third release the series fell flat. Marvel through Fox had to relaunch the franchise to breath new life into the franchise. Marvel has revised the print version of Tony Stark to “feel” more like Downey’s version. Fans of the comics may feel he is over saturating our genre. It is time to let other Avengers take the lead in Marvel’s cinematic world. Whedon confirmed Hawkeye and Hulk will have larger roles in AoU. With the recent success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier,we may have a new poster boy for Marvel Studios.

7. Thanos

We got a teaser of the Titan Thanos in the mid credits scene of Marvel’s Avengers and we have had several scenes alluding to the Infinity Gems. Marvel Studios has done a wonderful job tying their films together and with each new release it brings us closer to the classic Marvel storyline The Infinity Gauntlet from 1991. Thanos is one of a handful of Marvel villains that needs the entirety of the Marvel Universe to defeat. Thanos is the wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet (one of Marvel’s premier weapons) and could offer a great link between Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers as he is one of the cosmic villains in Marvel. It is safe to assume Thanos is in the roadmap of the Marvel cinematic universe. He is not the star of Phase 2 but certainly will make his way into Phase 3 or 4.

6. Hank Pym

Hank Pym in Ant-Man costume
Hank Pym as Ant-Man – Co-Founder of the Avengers/Creator of Ultron.

1st Appearance: Tales to Astonish # 27, 1962

Creators: Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

I refuse to believe that Hank Pym is not in AoU. How can the creator of Ultron not be included? With an Ant-Man film on the horizon this is the perfect platform to introduce him to mainstream moviegoers. Rumors and teases of the Ant-Man film continue to spread and Hank Pym is seemingly going to be more of a footnote in Marvel’s history and not one of the trailblazers as he is within the published comics. There has been little support of Hank Pym being in the Avengers or its sequel even though he was one of the founding members along with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Wasp. Rumors of AoU hint at Tony Stark creating Ultron instead of Pym. I find it odd that Hank Pym is good enough for a solo movie but not for a cameo with the team he helped create.

5. Masters of Evil

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes depiction of The Masters of Evil.
Masters of Evil as seen on Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

1st Appearance: Avengers #6, 1964

Created by: Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

The Masters of Evil seem like a logical transition into a true villain group to battle the Avengers. X-Men had The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as a foil and The Avengers could use The Masters of Evil (MoE). Founded by Baron Zemo to enact revenge on Captain America, the MoE have had many villains in their ranks including, Black Knight, Radioactive Man, Wrecking Crew, Egghead, Moonstone, Griffin, Wonder Man, Whirlwind, Enchantress, Klaw and countless others. Enchantress will likely be considered one of the choices for the next villain introduced in a future Thor movie as we have not had a female villain from Marvel Studios. Griffin was just mentioned on a recent episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is possible that the mid credit scene from Captain America: Winter Soldier eludes to Baron Von Strucker building the MoE with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as members. A simple re-imagining of their origins using the MoE instead of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants since Fox own the rights to the Brotherhood. Should the MoE appear in AoU it could offer an even stronger link between the future film releases of Marvel Studios.

4. Life Model Decoys

Nick Fury removing the face of one of his many Life Model Decoy’s.

1st Appearance: Strange Tales#135, 1965

Created by: Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

Why have these staples of classic Nick Fury been all but ignored? Nick Fury had these androids serve as body doubles in many occasions and they could be a great addition to the Nick Fury mythos Marvel Studios has spent years building. We had one reference of the LMD’s in Marvel’s Avengers and that was it. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. squashed the rumor that the Agent Colson killed at the end of Marvel’s Avengers was not a LMD. Marvel Studios could use the humor of Tony Stark realizing he’s arguing with a robot to their advantage. It could give us a great moment like when Hulk punched Thor or the banter between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.

3. Black Panther

King of Wakanda and Avenger T’Challa, the Black Panther needs to make his début in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Marvel announcing Luke Cage as a star of one of their new Netflix projects it seems like Black Panther is the logical choice to add some diversity to the Avengers. Black Panther became a strong ally of Captain America early on in his history. His role as King of the African nation of Wakanda can widen the scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There have been mentions of Vibranium in Captain America: The First Avenger and in Marvel’s Avengers. Vibranium is only found in Wakanda. Black Panther is a member of Marvel’s Illuminati and a valuable ally to Reed Richards,Captain America, the X-Men and others. Black Panther and the X-Men’s Storm are married and if Marvel can wrestle away the rights from Fox we could see the King and Queen of Wakanda together.

2. Ms. Marvel

Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel.

1st Appearance: Marvel Super Heroes # 13, 1968

Created by: Roy Thomas & Gene Colan

If the Avengers need diversity, the entirety of Marvel Universe needs it as well. Marvel lacks the iconic female hero like DC’s Wonder Woman. Marvel has tried to raise the fan base of Storm, Elektra, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Black Widow and other prominent heroines. None has had the success that Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel has. She has sustained a monthly book for years and has been given a boost to her credibility and power by serving as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. With the new moniker of Captain Marvel and her ties to Marvel’s cosmic world, she can link viewers to Guardians of the Galaxy. Carol Danvers could be another asset to transition from S.H.I.E.L.D. to The Avengers as Black Widow and Hawkeye did. With all due respect to She-Hulk, Carol Danvers is popular with readers and has been given near alpha status in the Marvel Universe, bringing her to the forefront with heroes such as Iron Man and Captain America. AoU can serve as a great introduction to Marvel Comics most prominent female super hero.

1. Magneto

Magneto in classic costume colors.
Magneto, Master of Magnetism.

1st Appearance: X-Men #1, 1963

Created by: Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

The most far-fetched option on this list is to see Magneto show up at the end of the film or in a post credit scene. As the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch it is possible he may bridge the gap between the Marvel cinematic universes of The Avengers and X-Men. In 2012 Marvel released the crossover event of AvX (Avengers vs. X-Men) and for the first time many of these heroes interacted with each other. Was that mini-series Marvel’s attempt at testing the waters of a potential super team up? Could it be foreshadowing to The Infinity Gauntlet, see Thanos above? The sales of AvX were not fantastic but they held strong for the duration. Introducing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver has to have a more significant effect than just keeping up with the history of the Avengers. We are skipping over Ant Man and Wasp for the mutant twins so there could be a greater reason for their inclusion. With Fox owning the rights to Magneto, it is unlikely Marvel Studios can work out an agreement to fulfill this wish but we can hope. Admittedly I want to see Magneto tear Iron Man’s armor off or stop Cap’s shield mid-flight.

Marvel Studios has struck movie gold with the Avengers franchise. Committing to the “phase” releases has been quite lucrative and successful. Avengers: Age of Ultron promises to impact the Marvel cinematic universe as its predecessor did. Little is known of the plot or any new characters introduced but adding some of the current comic books most popular heroes could help it surpass the critical and fan acclaim Marvel’s Avengers received. AoU has already confirmed Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Vision as new members. What else is in store for the flagship team of Marvel? Stay tuned “True Believer’s”.

  1. I wonder whether we’ll get cameos from other future Avengers in the film. Captain Marvel (Katee Sackhoff) and Wonder Man (?) would be people I’d like to see.

  2. I think Zola will hack into jarvis steal an iron man siut or at least schematics of one make it, baron von struker will use the mind gem ( lokis staff) to give ultron a mind. Then hunt down TWS and salvage his arm, then Ultron will be strong enough to make vision out of Jarvis to protect him while he gets stronger and makes his army then shit starts to go down

I hope Zola does come back somehow but I just rewatched cap 2 n that hydra leader said he had lost Zola when he was talking to the winter soldier….

      • In the comics Zola never dies, there’s always a backup. If he have WiFi then he had the capacity to transfer his consciousness anywhere

    • Jamie Tracy

Hilarious. I’d watch it. I’d cringe the entire time but I’d still watch it.

Cool post! Already sounds better than MoS.

  4. I know Sony has the rights for Spiderman, but do they have the rights to Spiderwoman ?….she is cool as hell, i would love to see her in a movie.

    • Jamie Tracy

Spider-Woman would be a great addition. May be to similar to Widow for cinematic reasons.

    • It’s very likely that Marvel owns the character but they are not allowed to use her codename, since “Spiderwoman” would make the general audience think of “Spiderman”, which would inflict damages to Sony’s property etc.

It’s the stuff law degrees are made of.

No, Spider-Woman is with Marvel. Despite the name, there’s not much at all tying her to Spider-Man

  5. I think ultron somehow will be created by Stark, and the baron von strucker will somehow take control of it, and then ultron with gain conscience or autonomy, and he will rebel againts his creators. I hope he actually kills the baron

  6. Ben Kerns

I agree with a lot of this list, if these ideas were brought into the series one at a time, as many of them probably will be, it would lead to a kick-ass film universe for Marvel. The only one I take issue with is The Masters of Evil. Not because they are a weak point in the the marvel universe, but because superhero moves seem to be pretty bad at dealing with the villain team. Take Batman and Robin and Spiderman 3, while both movies were plagued with issues, I always felt that they could have been greatly improved if they had only focused on one villain as opposed to a huge group of them. Especially since the Avengers is already dealing with a huge cast of heroes, it may lead to serious under-development of the characters that make the universe so interesting.

  7. Its a Joss Whedon movie, I think he may kill Iron man off. Which isn’t a bad thing, the Marvel Universe has so many characters to choose from that putting someone else in the spotlight would be fresh and exciting.

    • I know a lot of people would prefer at some time to end the iron man franchise and just let him die, but I feel you can do a lot more with characters from the marvel movie world. I understand Nolan’s batman for ending because it had a set ending where these character in way can live on.

I forecast 1 more Iron Man movie for RDJ. I hope Marvel studios have the sense to move forward with other characters rather than reboot their most iconic which has a lot to do with RDJ’s charismatic performance. I can’t think of another living actor at the moment who could pull the part off the way he did.

      • They will be a time when they have to replace him, just like Andrew Garfield is now Peter Parker/Spidey. However right now imagining someone else playing Tony/Iron Man is like imagining someone else playing Wolverine besides Hugh Jackman, both have made the character their own.

  8. gonna be awesome.

  9. David Mancini

I really wish Marvel would buy back the movie rights to all of its characters. Seeing the Avengers, Spiderman, and Fantastic 4 intertwine in films would be such a great experience. I was really hoping to see Galactus or Dr. Doom in an Avenger film, but that is highly unlikely in the near future due to legal issues.. I like the points you included, though. Seeing Magneto fight Iron Man would be great. Seeing him fight the Hulk would be even more interesting… I wonder if he would be able to tear out the iron in the Hulk blood as he is in his raging, green form.

    • I wish marvel weren’t subsumed by Disney period. I feel like: am I the only one that’s bothered by how many of our big stories Disney’s got ownership of. Star wars, all marvel hero’s not to mention the narratives that are Disney originals. Narrative monopoly?

I hope the Avengers theme returns, or at least a variation on it. I love that piece of music!

    Here’s what I think…

Stark / Banner create a super advanced, fully autonomous Iron Man Suit (that Tony does not have to be in, like IM3), and Zola (Recently freed to the Internet at the end of TWS) takes it over, and morphs somehow with the help of Hydra into Ultron. Chaos ensues.

Ultron, a crazy AI, notices JARVIS locked in the suit’s AI, and “frees” him by creating the Vision (a vessel for JARVIS to inhabit in the real world). JARVIS realizes Ultron is crazy and teams up with his creator/friend (Stark) to battle Ultron.

    • Good theory, but let me make some edits.

Tony, with the help of Bruce, designs the suit for JARVIS so that he could be his replacement for Iron Man.

Also, rumors surfaced in December that marvel was casting a real-life Edwin Jarvis for Avengers 2. So what if, instead of Zola just randomly coming into ultron’s body, Edwin Jarvis, who ends up being revealed as a hydra agent, uploads Zola’s algorithm into ultron and this turning him against stark and banner!

    • Billy Mesa
      0

Some people had the theory that Jarvis was going to turn into Ultron

      • Could be, I think the general theory is that Iron Man will create Ultron in some way. So Jarvis becoming him could make sense…

  12. Mary Awad

These are all really interesting and cool ideas! I’m sure the movie has taken up at least one of them. I agree about Iron Man. I love him too but it’s time to let some of the other heroes shine. Great list and fun article!

Cool list but I have one observation. That wasn’t Whirlwind in X-Men First Class, that was Riptide.

    • Jamie Tracy

Damn-Your right. I knew that, apparently I had Avengers on the brain. I had just re-read that issue when Wasp nearly kills Whirlwind.

  14. Jamie Tracy

Interestingly enough, the last episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had Blackout in it who was a member of Masters of Evil.

  15. With the comic/funny tone Marvel have placed in its productions im growing tired of the same formula of lighthearted characters and AAA CGI. Pls let some of the avengers heros die and change the tone of next sequels.

    • You’re right, they do have an interplay between humor and action, and I think for the most part its been a successful blend. It would be nice to see some more seriously toned films, but they seem to be going for more goofy than not lately.

  16. God I hope they kill off some characters. Scarlet Johanssen is so useless in these movies.

    • Jamie Tracy

I run into the same problem with her as I do Robert Downey Jr. I never really enjoyed Iron Man or Black Widow in the comics but the general public love Downey Jr. and Johansenn so we are being forced them as actors vs solid characterization.

    • She was great in the first Avengers. Hawkeye was the major space-waster.

This is my most anticipated film bar none. After the last one made me feel like a child watching hero hour on fox kids again but better i litterally cannot wait for this! In Whedon we trust!

  18. I would love to see all of the avengers against the incredible hulk not just those displayed. I’ll love to see Mr. Marvel vs. Hulk. Or Ms. Marvel and Mr. Marvel team up and reck havoc!!!

  19. Jemarc Axinto

While I have yet to have the opportunity to see the second Captain America film (all of the tears, he is one of my top favorites), I have to say that I would love to see the second film more established in his verse. When Edward Norton was…replaced by Mark Ruffalo, I heard it was because he wanted the first movie to be placed in the Hulk’s verse as it was in the comic when everyone united to fight the Hulk (who was being manipulated by Loki). That being said, while I have much love for RDJ as an actor, and while his rendition of Tony Stark is brilliant, I definitely agree that there should be a change.

I’m not entirely sure about Age of Ultron (I would have to reacquaint myself with it) but I know that the original “Avengers” comic featuring Thanos was hilariously far-fetched and featured a giant, flying, space bus, the Fantastic Four, Spider-man, and a whole lot of other ridiculous things happening. So it would be interesting in seeing how the production companies plan to unify all of the universes to create something “secured in reality” so-to-speak, but still holding true to the original comics.

Overall fantastic article and I certainly agree with much of it. Magneto sounds like an interesting choice for your number one, but I would definitely love to see Hank Pym, a FOUNDER of the Avengers, actually present.

    • Jamie Tracy

I think you are describing some of the follow up stories after Infinity Gauntlet with Thanos. The original Infinity Gauntlet is one of my all time favorites, I’d say it is a must read for fans of Marvel.

      Glad you enjoyed the article.

  20. This and Guardians I am pretty excited for.

    • Jamie Tracy

Guardians looks amazing. I am so happy they are keeping the humor with it. I think it is a smart move for Marvel.

  21. I makes me sad that the rights are split. I would love to see a Spiderman/Avengers team up!

    • Jamie Tracy

I don’t know the legal issues and contract associated with the rights of characters but if I were Sony or Fox I’d license the use of characters back to Marvel and make a fortune off of them without paying for production costs.

  22. LauraThorp

Great list! I completely agree with #8 and #3. I understand the focus on Iron Man because he is a fan favorite, due in large part to RDJ being a fan favorite. But I would love it if they took the to opportunity to focus on other characters with really interesting backstories (my vote is for Hawkeye, but my vote is always for Hawkeye no matter what). Also I would be so excited if Black Panther was included. Another of my favorite characters and, like you said, a great chance to add some necessary diversity.

    • Jamie Tracy

According to Whedon, he claims the story with have a significant focus on Hawkeye and Hulk. I think it just means they will have more lines than they did in the first film but it’s a start.

  23. absolutely on point with the Iron Man assessment. As fantastic as RDJ has been as Iron Man, films moving forward would benefit from less of a focus on the Iron Man character. The whole concept of “superhero” is a romantic one to me, and many others, so I am skeptical of the talk I’ve heard regard possibly killing off Iron Man. However, it would make sense

  24. Removed Black Widow or Hawk Eye and put in Ant-man and HIs gf whatever her name is

    • Jamie Tracy

Wasp. I’d love to see her also. We’d have to have Hank Pym as Giant Man if Wasp was in it.

    • Lamar Jacobs
      0

What’s the point of removing widow or hawk eye when you can add ant man and his gf what’s her name to the avengers. I still want to see more from hawk eye anyway, his costume is a needed upgrade to the original and the actor who plays him is awesome.

  25. Patrick Nuetzman

I agree with all of your points, save introducing the Masters of Evil.

    • Jamie Tracy

My main point I can make to try and convince you that Masters of Evil is a good idea is this; Save for Thanos and Galactus, it is unbelievable that one villain can defeat the Avengers. Thor beat Loki in his movie, why do we need the entire Avengers team to do it now? I’m oversimplifying things of course, but a team of villains would allow for other Avengers to develop more as well.

  26. Burke

I really like that you divided this article into more likely and less likely. I often am irritated that lists like these that are speculation seem to be purely wish lists, but you really did a good job of bringing up some legitimate speculation and separating your wish-list picks. I also really appreciate your explaining what references have been made that could make the picks more plausible.
I missed the LMD reference in Agents of Shield, but was that why they thought Nick Fury was dead? At any rate, do you think such a big plot point as Nick Fury evading death could perhaps tie into the introduction of LMD’s in the TV show or movies?

  27. Jamie Tracy

This coming week of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should mention it. Fury is set to be a guest (possibly as a recording) and I’m banking on an LMD reference.

  28. I too would love to see Ms. Marvel representation in the Avengers movies even if its not Danvers but instead the current iteration of Ms. Marvel.
