Discuss the role played by graphic design and art in determining the success or failure of presidential electoral campaigns. Did Shephard Fairey's Iconic Obama "Hope" poster play a substantial role in his electoral success? Describe the evolution of "buttons" used to demonstrate support for candidates beginning at the turn of the twentieth century to today's graphic modes demonstrating support (bumper stickers, t shirts).
Such an interesting topic! I think the hope poster really nailed the message of Obama's campaign. It's become iconic. – mattybas9 years ago
I totally agree. A good slogan, a good logo is a huge help. I think people associate slogan's/images with things very easily. It is easier for someone to recognize and support an image than recognize a person's face. It's easier to remember a slogan and have certain feelings roused in them, than it is to remember long agendas and speeches. – Tatijana9 years ago
Would it be helpful to consider television ads in the examination? One immediately thinks of Johnson's "Daisy." – Bo9 years ago
Would be interesting to touch on how presidential captains have evolved throughout the years, especially with new emerging technologies. – aamenson9 years ago
This has always been a very interesting topic to me! I think it has a huge effect on campaigns - Jeb Bush just changed his imagery/slogan to try to get a push in the campaigns. It would also be interesting to see the history/evolution of art through the years (screen print, woodcut, digital media, etc.). – epiphanysk9 years ago
Hi, this is Jen who proposed this. I just wanted to say thanks for the lovely comments. I'm glad the topic was of interest, as I'm a brand new addition to the community. I look forward to the article. – Jen Marler9 years ago
Interesting! I think that another way to look at this is how social media also impacts the ability of art to play an important role in presidential campaigns. The hope poster was something easily shared, and captured a feeling that Obama had in his 2008 campaign. Now, people can even incorporate some of the elements of political statements into Facebook profiles-like how a ton of people changed their profile picture to the colors of the French flag after the attacks there. – cray03099 years ago
Explain how people perceive information visually and the effect infographics have on the average viewer. Attention spans have rapidly declined and people have become lazy when it comes to reading any form of information. Graphic designers use infographics to convey messages and important facts, making the information easier to understand and retain.
Very interesting idea! It might be helpful if you could define what an infographic was, this would be useful information to include. Also, the title is a bit misleading as it refers to story telling, yet the body of the topic doesn't mention stories, writing, or story telling at all. The topic is more about how people perceive and convey information. Rewording the title so it is more appropriate would help. – Megan Finsel9 years ago
The brain can better absorb information integrated as a single image than it can a list of discrete facts. One helpful resource for this topic would be Information is Beautiful. – JLaurenceCohen9 years ago
Art is subjective- we all know it. But there are some abstract art pieces that are considered "art" yet they do not match the definition of Abstract Art. In addition, write about the characteristics of a "good" abstract art piece and a "bad" abstract art piece and how they relate to the definition of Abstract Art.
Can you provide some examples of Artwork that doesn't necessarily match the definition of Abstract? It may help define your point even more. Also, I agree with previous comments that the topic title isn't worded well enough to be clear. Perhaps: "Defining the Meaning of 'Abstract' in the Art World" – Megan Finsel9 years ago
The cultural critic Camille Paglia is a critic of identity politics, especially with regards to gender. She has said that the proliferation of different identities, the different gradations of gender, and etc., often happen in the late-stages of a culture, before the verge of collapse, where all kinds of amoral behavior result, such as homosexuality and sadomasochism, which are basically signs of decadence (her words, not mine.) Is there any truth to this? Do you think that identity politics, especially of sexual and gender identity, is a sign of the fall of Western civilization, specifically the United States? Give specific examples from art of any medium to support your claims about the decline of Western civilization.
On the 24th December at 12.01 am, The Beatles' music became available on different online streaming platforms like Spotify, Deezer and Amazon. Explore why this has taken so long. What are the conditions for an artist to put his music online? What are the politics of music streaming? Why were The Beatles' franchise to reluctant to go into streaming? What is there to win/to loose?
Most of it probably comes down to 1) who owns the rights to the song 2) how much streaming services have to pay – JLaurenceCohen9 years ago
An obvious difference between the epic poem "The Aeneid", and the opera "Aeneas and Dido" is that "The Aeneid" discusses how Aeneas created the foundations for Rome, whilst "Aeneas Dido", by Henry Purcell, only focuses on the aspects of that epic poem that focus on the relationship between Aeneas, and Dido. With that stated, compare the two works, and discuss the modifications that Purcell made to his opera. Specifically, given that the opera was written in the late 17th Century, discuss what role nationalism played in the plot if any (in light of the Roman, Trojan, and Carthaginian dynamics). What role does amourous emotion play in both the epic poem, and the opera (including, but not limited to Dido's suicide)? The role of the gods in both should also be discussed.
Through out the entire of The Aeneid, Dido only appears in a fraction of the books so if anything I'd say that it's more of focusing on the lens of their relationship and the storytelling displaying their relationship. There is far much more to The Aeneid beside this such as his long and tasking journey and the battles he had to rigorously fight against both man and gods. – Kmo9 years ago
Can you elaborate on the role of the gods more so??

A group of British librarians recently began legislative action against the U.K. government for its failure to protect public libraries from defunding. Argue why groups representing libraries, museums, and schools in the U.S. should do the same.
Very good topic. There are many libraries closing because they weren't able to get funding... But I would suggest expanding the topic by what other alternatives arts councils could use. There were few libraries managed to save themselves via lobby or other means. For example, Hillingdon Libraries in UK installed Starbucks Cafe in their facilities to gather budget for new equipment and books. Looking at cases like these and discussing the difficulty in implementing strategies as such might strengthen the topic. – idleric9 years ago
Every decade has a definitive sound when it comes to rock music. The 80s were the perfect time for leather-clad egomaniacs to express themselves through fast-paced rock and the occasional power ballad. The 90s belonged to brooding, flannel-wearing "dudes," expressing their angst through distorted guitar-driven lamentations. Even the 2000s had a special sound, even if it was commercial alt-rock. With so many of today's bands striving for a different sound, how will people look back ten years from now and describe rock music from 2010- present day?
What is your definition of "rock?" The genre is so large nowadays, that it is difficult to conceptualize the style you are referring to if just "rock" is used. – WilliamWay9 years ago
This is a very interesting article as I do agree that the view of music and music genre has changed greatly over the years. Maybe even throwing in some quotes about rock from the aspect of musicians. If I remember correctly it was one of the band members of KISS that even considered for rock to be "dead." – Kevin Mohammed9 years ago
